I was shocked, appalled and deeply saddened when Saddam Hussein was executed.... In my opinion, a life is a life. I don't necessarily agree with locking people away in prison and throwing away the key, either.

Far too many people are wasting away in jails for no good reason other than over zealous abuse of power by profit-driven governments.

The death penalty for the Bali 9 is totally wrong on so many levels.... as it was with Nguyen Tuong Van and many others. There is absolutely no point to it - that is the truly tragic part of it. It serves absolutely no purpose other than to sicken us all as a species.

im shocked your shocked that saddam was executed!
he deserved to be executed after everything he did...he murdered thousands of people, women and children,...he took pleasure in torturing people...a guy like that has no right to life, and i was glad to see justice done by his own people...why would you feel saddened at the death of this monster?....
as for executing aussie teenagers, that is out of order!

Well mini... many of us here oppose the death penalty altogether - no matter who it's for, and that includes Saddam Hussein.

There is no lesson learnt by the person who recieves the death penalty... they are dead... and "an eye for an eye" does not acheive anything at all.

The threat of the death penalty does nothing to deter future criminals from committing their crime - it's all a part of the game as to whether they'll be caught or get away with it.

This is an arguement that could go backwards and forwards forever... but my opinion is that the death penalty is an abhorrant, cruel and senseless "punishment".

you can oppose the death penalty for people like ruth ellis, derek bentley, barlow and chambers and all the other people who have been hanged as victims of circumstance, but not for scumbags like saddam hussain....
he deserved everything he got,the lesson learned here is there is no room in the world for evil despots like saddam....sometimes the death penalty is the only answer for these people..why not save your sympathy for all the people he gassed when he dropped the poison gas on the kurds,or the guy he put thru a plastic shredder feet first when he was alive! ...now that is cruel and sensless, and boy thats gotta hurt!......saddam was like a rabid dog who needed putting down......

Like I said... "This is an arguement that could go backwards and forwards forever... but my opinion is that the death penalty is an abhorrant, cruel and senseless "punishment"."

Your opinion is respected but do not expect me to agree with you...

We all have our own views - and I am not blind to Saddam's atrocities, nor do I condone them - but my stance is no Death Penalty at all for anyone and that to me is fair. I can't be half and half on such a serious issue. I think Saddam incarcerated for the rest of his life was a fair enough punishment but totally outrageous for Martin and Michael, 20 years for Renee and death for Scott, Matthew, Si Yi, Andrew, Tan, and Myuran is way beyond comprehension for me... in comparission to Saddam (and honestly - there is no comparisson really) all of the Bali 9 have served more than enough time and should be home with their families...

I AGREE THEY SHOULD COME HOME,BUT I CANT HELP FEELING CHAN AND SUKUMARAN HAVE ABUSED THE HOSPITALITY OF THEIR LOVELY HOST COUNTRY AUSTRALIA...IF THEY CHOOSE TO FLOOD THEIR HOST COUNTRY WITH DRUGS THEY SHOULD NOT EXPECT THE AUSSIE GOVERNMENT TO RUN TO THEIR AID WHEN THEY GET BUSTED.....THOSE 2 SHOULD BE PREPARED TO DO THE TIME IN JAIL,AND THE OTHERS SHOULD BE BROUGHT HOME.....ESPECIALLY THOSE YOUNG ONES WHO WERE NOTHING MORE THAN TEENAGERS.....THERE HAS TO BE LAW AND ORDER OTHERWISE THE WORLD WOULD GO CRAZY,IF CHAN AND SUKUMARAN HAD BEEN SUCCESSFULL THINK OF ALL THE FAMILIES DESTROYED BY THE DRUGS THAT THEY HAD BROUGHT IN TO THE COUNTRY.....DONT YOU THINK THEY DESERVE TO BE JAILED FOR THAT?.....THEY HAVE DESTROYED THE LIVES OF THE REST OF THE BALI 9 BY GETTING THEM BUSTED DOING THEIR DIRTY DEEDS .....I FEEL SORRY FOR THEM,HOW CAN YOU SENTENCE AN 18 YEAR OLD KID TO DEATH,IT JUST AINT RIGHT,AND I OPPOSE IT.......I RESPECT YOUR VIEWS,BUT I CANNOT AGREE WITH THEM,BUT I ALSO ENJOY DEBATING WITH YOU..........
I LOOK FORWARD TO OUR NEXT SPARRING SESSION......

Well I don't consider Australia to be the "host" country - as you put it mini - of Chan and Sukumaran. Regardless of where they were born (and by the way Chan was born in Australia), the colour of their skin, their religion, etc... they are both Australian citizens. So the young men did what they did - which was a bad thing in both Australia and Bali. They committed a crime BUT they are both Australian and therefore they are both entitled to whatever assistance our government CAN give them.

THOSE 2 SHOULD BE PREPARED TO DO THE TIME IN JAIL,AND THE OTHERS SHOULD BE BROUGHT HOME.....ESPECIALLY THOSE YOUNG ONES WHO WERE NOTHING MORE THAN TEENAGERS.....
They are both doing their best with their time in jail... living, breathing and appreciating every moment they have. Chan is fairly social I believe and spends his days chatting with friends and partaking in available activities, whereas Sukumaran (from what I've heard) is a little more reserved and spends his time doing his "own thing". It is tragic that all the young ones are in this predicament - whatever the reason for their involvement and the role they played. At the time of their arrests their ages were:

Andrew Chan 21
Myuran Sukumaran 24
Michael Czugaj 19
Si Yi Chen 20
Renae Lawrence 27
Tan Nguyen 21
Matthew Norman 18
Scott Rush 19
Martin Stephens 28

THERE HAS TO BE LAW AND ORDER OTHERWISE THE WORLD WOULD GO CRAZY,IF CHAN AND SUKUMARAN HAD BEEN SUCCESSFULL THINK OF ALL THE FAMILIES DESTROYED BY THE DRUGS THAT THEY HAD BROUGHT IN TO THE COUNTRY.....
As far as I'm concerned the world has gone crazy... and law and order has not done a great deal to stop all the horrible things that go on. We could certainly get into a political argument here as there are many leaders of large country's that have caused much pain to many families far worse than the crime of the Bali 9 - but lets not cross that line. Drugs are a huge issue and yes it does destroy families and lives. The issue of drugs will not be solved by the death of any of the Bali 9. For every courier that is caught or killed there is another to take their place. The death penalty is not deserved... at all. Jail... yes... well deserved... gives them time to reassess their values and consider their mistakes - perhaps realising their failure and allowing them to be remorseful and reform their lives.

Anyway mini... thats my view... again... did you enjoy that sparring session

..............CHEERS,YES I DID ENJOY THAT SPARRING ESSION...YOU ARE A CHAMPION SPARRER
BUT IM STILL NOT CONVINCED......OK ,SO LETS NOT KILL CHAN AND SUKUMRAN,BUT DONT YOU THINK THEY DESERVE TO PAY FOR TRYING TO FLOOD AUSTRAILIA WITH DRUGS?.....DO YOU THINK THEY SHOULD JUST BE ABLE TO WALK AWAY FROM THIS WITHOUT A BLEMISH ON THEIR CHARACTER?
WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER SUITLABLE PUNISHMENT FOR TRYING TO FLOOD AUSTRALIA WITH DRUGS?.....I WOULD THROW AWAY THE KEY FOR GUYS LIKE CHAN AND SUKUMARAN WHO DONT EVEN HAVE THE BOTTLE TO CARRY THE DRUGS THEMESELVES...THEY WANT SOMEONE ELSE TO TAKE ALL THE RISKS SO THEY CAN ENJOY THE ILL GOTTEN GAINS.....THE RISK TAKERS WERE RUSH,NORMAN,LAWRENCE AND THE OTHER MULES.
THEY ARE THE ONES WHOS LIVES HAVE BEEN RUINED
SO...HOW ABOUT ROUND 2 ?
